MENA DISTRICT COOLING PROJECTS CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

The Middle East and North African region plays a key role in curbing climate change and contributing to the global efforts to reduce carbon emissions. Cooling is an energy-intensive and non-stop activity in arid environments, and district cooling provides a major energy saving. This benefit is being realized in new and upcoming megacities in the region, where district cooling has set a strong foothold. Nearly 650GWh of electricity savings have been recorded by the use of district cooling in Dubai alone in 2020.

The 1st MENA District Cooling Projects Conference’s brought key operators from Saudi Arabia, Egypt and UAE who presented on their upcoming projects and decarbonisation efforts that not only lead to energy saving but also improved business value. The Department of Energy of Abu Dhabi and The Regulatory and Supervisory Bureau of Dubai presented the updates in regulations, frameworks and licenses that boost the DC plant’s functionality and sustainability.

Several discussions around energy retrofitting, modernising and digitalising the DC plant discussed diverse viewpoints and brought advice from both individuals and organizations who are developing and implementing the latest technologies including IoT, AI, ML, etc. A dedicated session with speakers from UAE, Egypt and the USA discussed making the DC plant more sustainable by reducing the use of potable water and improving the use of renewable energy, TSE and seawater in the DC plants. The discussion on the financial aspects of the DC operations including mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures witnessed maximum engagement from the regional stakeholders.

The MENA region is witnessing rapid growth in dense cities and communities, raising the number of upcoming district cooling projects, as well as the need for upgrading existing plants with digital transformation and energy retrofits. The district cooling market in the Middle East is projected to reach USD 15 Billion by 2027.

While district cooling has proven to be the most energy-efficient cooling solution, there are several new methods and improvements to decrease its carbon footprint and we aim to explore those opportunities in this edition.
